Residents press Byron council over New Haven Subdivision flooding; city says developer revised plans

Several residents told the City of Byron Mayor and Council on April 14 that properties near the New Haven Subdivision off Highway 42 have suffered flooding after a berm was removed. Charles Hayes and Leon Collins described standing water on their properties and showed photos to the council, urging action from city officials.
Mayor Michael Chidester said the builders had withdrawn their earlier variance requests and submitted an updated plan that the city said complies with local requirements; the city identified Burke Murph of Georgia Water & Environmental Services (GWES) as its consulting engineer on the matter. Nicholas Cowley, who said he represents the subdivision’s HOA, said the HOA is cleaning its retention area in hopes of relieving some problems, and Susan Ray asked whether slow-release structures could reduce peak runoff. Mayor Chidester told residents, “The City of Byron will make sure that the concerns expressed were heard and that the required protocol will be followed by the builders.”
