The Sunol Glen Unified board approved a new AFT elementary counselor job description aimed at strengthening the district's social‑emotional supports. The superintendent said the proposed position would be co‑funded and structured as a 0.40 FTE. "0.40, which would be about 2 days a week," she said during the presentation.
Staff framed the hire as part of a multi‑tiered system of support: counselors would provide group and individual interventions that are not therapy but help students with social relationships and academic navigation. Trustees asked whether the cost approximates doubling the prior contracted coverage and discussed placement on the district salary schedule and credentialing (the counseling services credential). The board moved to approve the job description and asked staff to post the position with a target of filling it by February, subject to applicant availability and budget confirmation.
