District plans new science investments at Vargas as part of school-focus strategy

Dr. Dean described Vargas’s science emphasis and plans to integrate a new curriculum (referred to as Simply Science/Mystery Science) and support the campus with dedicated maker-space and lab visits. “Vargas continues to focus on trying to provide engaging opportunities around science, integrating that, continuing to work to, utilize the science lab,” Dr. Dean said.
Trustees and parents discussed sustainability of garden programs around seasonal breaks, staffing needs and whether the site needs additional fiscal resources to maintain curriculum consistency year-round. Board members requested more detail on staffing and funding pathways so the district can support sustained science experiences rather than one-off events.
Staff did not propose a final budget at the meeting, but committed to returning with specific implementation suggestions and to include garden, field-trip and curriculum costs in future planning materials.
