Owner warns stone cladding would prolong work, could force road closure on Corinthian Island

At the Dec. 16 hearing the property owner for 62 Alcatraz (Speaker 7) urged the commission to consider construction impacts, telling commissioners that ‘‘it'll take us probably a week to do the shotcrete wall, to take out the wall and put a shotcrete wall in. It would probably take another two weeks to clad that wall with stone, and we'd have to close the road to do that.’’ The owner said moving heavy stone, grout and pallets up the island’s narrow roads would be difficult and disruptive for neighbors.
Commissioners acknowledged the hardship but weighed it against neighborhood character and code direction. Several commissioners suggested possible design transitions or partial retention of existing stone to soften the change; the owner said they would consult immediate neighbors further if requested. Staff noted Public Works had reviewed the engineering and had not raised objections, and staff reaffirmed that temporary emergency measures would be allowable if the existing wall presented an imminent hazard.
