Mayor Peter Schwartzman opened the Dec. 15 council meeting by reading a proclamation recognizing Sergeant Byron Baird’s service and sacrifices in Afghanistan, including injuries from explosions in 2010 and later that left him with lasting disabilities. "And now therefore I, Peter Schwartzman, mayor of the city of Galesburg, do hereby proclaim and formally collectively recognize Sergeant Baird's valor, his profound sacrifice in the defense of freedom, and his indomitable perseverance," Schwartzman said.
Representative Dan Swanson presented an Illinois House Certificate of Recognition and an Illinois flag flown over the Capitol, praising Baird’s decision to serve. "It's not very often we get to recognize a true hero like this in a setting like this," Swanson said, and thanked Baird and his family for their sacrifices. No council action was required; the recognition and certificate were presented during the meeting's ceremonial portion.
