Durham DSS honors Program Integrity Unit and longtime supervisor Sheila Dorsett upon retirement

The Durham County Board of Commissioners recognized the work of the Durham Department of Social Services Program Integrity Unit at its July 28 meeting and honored the unit’s supervisor, Sheila Dorsett, who is retiring July 31 after more than 30 years in state service and 14 years with Durham.
County and DSS leaders described the unit’s role in preventing fraud, waste and abuse and ensuring eligible residents receive proper benefits. DSS staff said the unit collected and returned $1,600,000 to federal and state budgets for the fiscal year ending June 30 and that Durham County retained a little over $392,000 through investigations and established claims.
"This small but mighty unit collected and returned $1,600,000 to federal and state budgets this fiscal year ending June 30," a DSS representative said. Sheila Dorsett, the unit supervisor, told the board she was surprised by the recognition and said her work will continue in other statewide roles; commissioners thanked her for long service and noted the importance of program integrity as federal changes to Medicaid and SNAP are discussed.
What happens next: The board publicly thanked DSS staff and wished Dorsett well in retirement; commissioners noted that program-integrity work will remain central as federal rules evolve and staff continue oversight and training responsibilities.
