Durham County renames Admin 2 building for longtime leader William “Bill” Bell

The applicant, Dr. Kristen Bell Adair, told commissioners she had pursued the recognition “to consider naming a building after my father” and thanked the board for its consideration.
Commissioner Michelle Burton moved the naming motion, saying “I would like to make the motion that we name the County Administrative 2 Building after William B. Bill Bell,” and Commissioner Stephen Valentine seconded. The board praised Bell’s long career: staff materials and commissioners noted Bell served as a Durham County commissioner beginning in 1972, served multiple terms as board chair, and later as mayor, shaping local policy across decades.
Vice Chair Dr. Mike Lee called the vote “a very historic night,” urging the recognition as an example to motivate public service. Commissioner Wendy Jacobs highlighted Bell’s anti-poverty initiatives and a driver’s license restoration program that grew from local work she said Bell led. Chair Nada Alam said the board would coordinate a public unveiling and celebration for the family.
The motion passed unanimously. County staff confirmed the naming follows the county’s naming policy and that details about a public unveiling will be advertised to the community.
