The council approved a local landmark designation for 325 North Prairie Street following the landmark commission's unanimous recommendation at its Nov. 4 public hearing. Staff described the home as built in 1891 for James Edwin Webster and noted Inez Webster's charitable work, including work with Near East Relief Service.
A council member who said they had spent personal funds restoring the home spoke in favor and said, "I'm going to get no financial benefit from this designation." The speaker framed the designation as a way to preserve the property's character and the Websters' story. The council approved the designation with five votes in favor and one abstention.
Staff said the designation imposes a requirement that visible improvements receive a certificate of appropriateness under the historic preservation ordinance and that there is no budget impact from the designation.
