Council initiates demolition proceedings for seven dilapidated properties

The Galesburg City Council voted to initiate demolition proceedings for seven properties at its Jan. 5 meeting. Assistant City Manager Saint George said staff recommended initiation for properties assessed as dangerous, structurally deficient, fire-damaged, or with prolonged utility disconnection; she read a list of seven addresses that would be entered into the process.
"Staff recommend approval to initiate the demolition proceedings for 7 properties that are in a dangerous and unsafe condition or beyond reasonable repair," Saint George said, then read the addresses included in the packet. Staff explained the process begins with 15-day notices to owners, moves to the city's legal department, and may proceed through the court system to secure demolition orders; funds are available in the property redevelopment fund.
Councilors asked how long the process would take and staff replied it varies by case and court processing time; the initiation motion passed on a 6–yes roll call. Staff offered to follow up on the status of other properties that councilors had previously reported.
