Council approves two-year tourism agreement, allocates $190,000 annually

The council on Nov. 17 approved a two-year tourism promotion agreement with the Galesburg Tourism & Visitors Bureau that will allocate $190,000 annually from hotel/motel tax receipts to support marketing and leverage state matching funds.
"Staff recommend approval of a 2 year tourism agreement between the city of Galesburg tourism and visitors bureau from 01/01/2026 to 12/31/2027. The City will allocate $190,000 annually from the hotelmotel tax revenues to support GTBB's tourism marketing program," city staff said. Staff added the agreement shortens the term to allow a transition while a new bureau director is recruited and the bureau will lease 2163 East Main Street as a welcome center.
Council approved the agreement on a unanimous 6-0 vote. A council member asked how long the tourism director position had been vacant; staff said the former director left in late summer and the bureau hopes to have a new director identified around the start of the year.
