Assistant City Manager Saint George told the council that applications are open for the City of Galesburg's Local Housing Assistance Repair Program, expanded in December to include renter-occupied homes and increased funding for interior and exterior projects.
"Since its inception in 2022, the initiative has successfully supported over a 100 home repair projects," Saint George said, and noted the expansion to renter-occupied homes and increased eligible project types. Council member Hennigan asked how renter eligibility would work; staff responded that the owner must apply for a qualifying single-family rental and that income eligibility will be based on the tenant.
"Only single family rentals are eligible, to make that clear," a staff member (identified in the packet as Steve) said, adding that the program calculates income eligibility on the tenant rather than the owner. Councilors welcomed the expansion and asked staff to follow up on questions about specific properties off the agenda.
