Council approves purchase of 1217 South Pearl Street to remove blight, expand park adjacency

"Staff recommend approval of a resolution to purchase the property located at 1217 South Pearl Street for $10,000," Saint George said. She said the property sits at the southeast corner of East 5th Street and South Pearl Street next to HT Custer Park and roughly 4.4 acres of city-owned land; staff described nuisance issues since the prior owner vacated in 2024 and said acquisition would support neighborhood stabilization.
Councilmember Miller, whose ward includes the parcel, said he has received numerous complaints and supported demolition and redevelopment near the south side. Council voted 7–0 to approve the purchase; staff said the city plans demolition of the structure to eliminate blight, improve public safety and create a more functional site.
