The council authorized staff to purchase a tax-liability property at 566 Hawthorne Court from the Knox County trustee for $813, a step staff said will allow the city to obtain a demolition order and then market the surplus property.
"Staff recommend approval of a resolution authorizing the purchase of property located at 566 Hawthorne Court from the Knox County trustee for $813," Saint George told the council, describing the house as abandoned and in disrepair with no water service since 2008 and unpaid taxes. Saint George said the purchase would be funded through the redevelopment fund (Fund 23) and would expedite demolition through the Knox County Circuit Court process.
Council voted 7–0 to approve the resolution. Staff said the long-term goal is to remove blight, then offer the parcel as surplus after demolition and any necessary remediation procedures.
