Galesburg council approves 2025 property tax levy; city says rate lowest since 2008

The Galesburg City Council on Nov. 17 approved the 2025 property tax levy ordinance, establishing a levy request of $10,871,732 and an estimated tax rate of about $2.35. Staff told the council the total dollars collected will rise roughly 4% compared with the 2024 levy extension because assessed property values increased.
"Staff is recommending approval of the city council approve the 2025 property tax tax levy ordinance, which establishes a levy request of $10,871,732 representing a decrease in the tax rate and an increase of 4% in the total dollars collected compared to the 2024 tax levy extension," city staff member Mr. Hansen said. Hansen also noted the proposed rate is approximately $2.35, a 3.7-cent decrease from the prior year.
According to staff, the levy supports general city operations including parks and recreation, IMRF obligations and police and fire pensions, with 18.6% of the levy apportioned to the public library. The levy is scheduled to be collected in 2026, with the majority of funds arriving in June and September.
The council approved the ordinance on a roll-call vote: Hunnigan, Miller, White, Acharya, Saul and Cheeseman voted yes. The ordinance was recorded as item 25-10-18.
