The Durham County Board of Commissioners adopted a ceremonial resolution on Aug. 25 honoring Thomas Henry Krakauer for his long career in museum leadership and his role in developing Durham's Museum of Life and Science.
Commissioner Burton read the resolution, which recounted Krakauer’s education (BS from the University of Rochester; MS from the University of Miami; PhD in zoology and physiology from the University of Florida, 1970), his directorship of the Roanoke Valley Science Museum and his tenure as president and CEO of the Museum of Life and Science beginning in 1985. The resolution credited him with expanding the museum’s budget, securing multiple National Science Foundation grants, and leading additions such as the butterfly house. "We pause to honor this remarkable man who will always be remembered as an accomplished birder, butterfly enthusiast and genealogist," Commissioner Burton read.
The commissioners noted no family members were present; the clerk will provide the signed resolution to the appropriate emergency services and museum offices for posting and any upcoming memorials or events.
