"Fiber Internet would be a great addition to the city utilities," said Committee member (Speaker 3), who outlined pricing examples from providers and said some companies quoted $65–$90 per month for gigabit service. Council members and a local business owner raised concerns about construction methods and whether a franchise agreement or federal grant would obligate the city to minimum subscribership levels.
The council heard that some proposals could require underground construction and right-of-way or planning commission involvement, while other providers propose aerial installation that would minimize homeowner easements. The council discussed procurement options — a request for proposals (RFP) versus direct selection — and the legal implications if the city were to support a federal funding application that could create an initial exclusivity window.
After discussion, a council member moved to direct staff to continue pursuing vendor options that pose low financial risk to residents and to consult the city attorney on the appropriate procurement path. The motion carried by voice vote.
The council did not select a specific company. Next steps include staff follow-up to identify additional qualified vendors, return with legal guidance on whether an RFP or other process is required, and report back to the council with recommended options.
