Durham issues RFP to endorse Golden Leaf grant applicants; endorsements due Sept. 8

County staff explained the Golden Leaf Foundation’s Community Based Grants Initiative and the county’s role in endorsing projects for the North Central Prosperity Zone.
Staff explained that Golden Leaf awards focus on three priority areas—job creation and economic investment, workforce development and agriculture—and that endorsed projects must operate wholly in a single county. Under Golden Leaf rules the county manager may endorse up to four projects with a combined endorsement cap of $2,000,000 and no single endorsement greater than $1,500,000. Endorsements to Golden Leaf are due Sept. 8; county proposals responding to the county RFP are due Aug. 19.
Staff emphasized the endorsement is procedural—not a county grant or contract—and that endorsement does not guarantee funding. The county said it will weight local applications toward Golden Leaf criteria (rural/unincorporated impact, shovel‑ready projects, demonstrated community buy‑in) to maximize competitiveness.
Why it matters: The Golden Leaf funds can provide one‑time capital for economic projects in unincorporated areas and create an early opportunity for county departments, nonprofits and local partners to apply for implementation funding this cycle.
