Chawanakee Unified School District trustees on Oct. 7 approved an application seeking an exemption from the statutory requirement for minimum classroom teacher‑salary expenditures. Chief Business Officer Melissa Kielpinski told the board that "With the additional allowable reductions, the percentage has improved from the previously presented 44.62% to 47.11%." The board voted unanimously to submit the waiver application.
Superintendent Jamie Nino said the district will examine the matter further at an upcoming budget workshop. The board recorded no dissent on the motion; Trustee Barbara Bigelow moved to approve and Trustee Jessie Hutchens seconded. The district and the county superintendent’s office worked together on allowable reductions before the submission, according to the presentation.
