County sets public hearing on proposed 2024 International Fire Code and amendments

Fire Marshal Brad Crisp presented the proposed adoption package for the 2024 International Fire Code and a set of locally amended provisions. He said the package contains 85 amendments, including 47 that originate with the building code and a mix of clarifications, less-restrictive, and seven state-required items covering fireworks and explosives.
Crisp walked commissioners through notable amendments: increasing bonfire clearance from 50 to 100 feet; protection of exterior riser rooms to prevent sprinkler-system freezing; new provisions for alternative fire protection for certain assembly occupancies; and an increase in the required signage size for fire-department connections from 1 inch lettering to 4 inches to aid visibility. He recommended the board set a public hearing in January 2025 and to direct the clerk to publish the hearing notice; the commission approved the hearing and publication by roll call.
Crisp also recommended fee adjustments for projects outside of fire-district taxing boundaries (doubling example fees for service drives and plan-review multipliers for some townships), noting follow-up with the state fire marshal's office would be required before final adoption.
