Sedgwick County adopts Region G hazard mitigation plan to qualify for FEMA mitigation grants

Sedgwick County commissioners voted unanimously to adopt the 2024 Kansas Homeland Security Region G Hazard Mitigation Plan, a regional update to the county’s hazard risk and mitigation strategy. Planner John Schroffer told the board the plan is FEMA-approved, complies with federal guidance and the Stafford Act, and renews the county’s eligibility for multiple mitigation grant programs.
Schroffer described mitigation measures already underway — including a tornado siren replacement program — and actions that have been identified but lack funding, such as cleanup work on Cowskin Creek to prevent flooding. He also said the updated plan includes newer hazards such as cyber threats. Commissioners praised the work and the broad regional collaboration reflected in the document.
Adoption by the board opens opportunities to apply for FEMA mitigation grants, including Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) and Flood Mitigation Assistance, among others. The resolution was approved by roll call.
