The measure, approved on second reading, covers land south of U.S. Route 20 east of Farmington Way and drew questions from council members about permitted uses.
Council discussion identified the frontage along U.S. 20 as reserved for future commercial and retail development, while the interior portion is planned for industrial use. The applicant's representative described the industrial area as intended for indoor operations and warehousing: "It could be used for it's basically all indoor operations, indoor warehousing," the applicant representative said. Alderman Grahamkowski asked whether multifamily housing would be allowed; the representative and staff said it would not be permitted without a rezoning application.
Mayor thanked the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and city staff for supporting the project and said the annexation promotes sales tax revenue and job creation along the U.S. 20 corridor. The motion carried on a roll-call vote with nine aye votes and no opposition; the motion was moved by Alderman Peterson and seconded by Alderman Stevens.
