Durham County proclaims Fire Prevention Week, emphasizes lithium‑ion battery safety

Durham County accepted a proclamation for Fire Prevention Week during the Sept. 22 meeting and county fire and emergency services used the opportunity to highlight lithium‑ion battery safety in homes.
"This year's theme is Charge into Fire Safety and focuses on lithium ion batteries in the home," Director Lockhart said, urging residents to look for safety certifications and to "use the cords that came with the device, follow the instructions, and charge the device on a hard surface." He added that batteries should never be thrown in the trash or regular recycling bins and encouraged residents to take them to safe battery recycling locations.
A public commenter backed the message, noting repeated incidents of batteries catching fire and thanking the county for raising awareness. County staff also pointed residents to local hazardous‑waste and county recycling opportunities for safe disposal.
