County says private donation will fund sheriff site upfit, adds five staff positions

Durham County officials told the Board of Commissioners on Sept. 22 that a private donation from an RTP partner will fund an upfit of a sheriff's office site and that the county has adjusted staffing to operate the site.
"We did realign positions in the sheriff's office budget to support 5 FTEs for the staffing of this," Manager Hager said, adding the partnership with the Research Triangle Foundation had been discussed during the budget process. David LaBarre, director of planning and development with the sheriff's office, said the donation is generous and the county is performing value‑engineering to stay within the available budget. "So it is a very generous donation for our RTP to the sheriff's office, and we are conducting a high level of value engineering to make sure that we fit and operate within that budget," LaBarre said.
Commissioner Jacobs had asked how cost overruns would be handled and how day‑to‑day staffing would work; staff answered that directions had been given to operate within the donated budget and that the five positions are funded in the sheriff's office budget. Commissioners thanked staff and partners for the collaboration and said they appreciated the private support that would avoid immediate county capital expenditures.
The board approved the consent agenda later in the meeting, which included the item, by recorded vote.
