The presenters said many commissions impose repeated staff demands for agenda preparation and that Blue Lake’s small population makes it hard to maintain multiple commissions. The proposed consolidation would retain the planning commission separate (due to legal constraints) and combine parks & rec, arts & heritage and economic development into a single advisory commission with proposed sizes of 11, 9 or 7 members. The presenters told the council the consolidation could also enable broader fundraising authorization under a single commission structure.
Public safety commissioner Lynn Glenn and other residents asked how a combined commission would function in practice, what skill sets would be sought for members, and how much the city would actually save. Residents and staff suggested trial joint meetings, charter and ordinance review, and a reapplication process if the council moves forward. Council asked staff to bring back more detailed models and legal clarifications for future consideration.
