Commissioner outlines options for Jackson House after $700,000–$1,000,000 repair estimate

At its Jan. 20 meeting the Eagle Urban Renewal Agency heard an update on the Jackson House and the Old Park Extension. Commissioner Craig Kwame said the agency has completed emergency stabilization — replacing the roof and stabilizing an unstable chimney — and that the city has ordered an appraisal to inform next steps.
"We replaced the the roof and stabilized the the, chimney that was so tall that it was unstable," Craig Kwame said in describing recent repairs and an open house that solicited public preferences about the house. He told the board most members of the public prefer that the city not continue to own the Jackson House.
Kwame said the appraisal is needed before the city decides whether to invest in full repairs, lease the property, or sell the house and retain the grounds. He gave a preliminary repair cost range, stating: "What we're hearing is, 700,000 up to 1000000 dollars." The board did not take action; Kwame said those estimates would be refined after the appraisal.
On the Old Park Extension, Kwame said the project is delayed by right-of-way acquisitions. "There was 2 private owner properties that had to be agreed to on right away. 1 of them was satisfied ... The other 1 is Walgreens, and there's some pushback on being able to get the right away needed for the Walgreens," he said. Because of the outstanding parcel issue, the Old Park Extension is not moving forward and options are being explored to resolve the impasse.
Board members asked whether the extension outcome would influence decisions about the Jackson House; Kwame said the appraisal will guide the city's direction and that multiple options remain under consideration, including repairing the house (costs estimated in the $700,000–$1,000,000 range), leasing it or selling it.
The board did not vote on the Jackson House at the meeting and deferred further decisions until the appraisal and related negotiations were complete.
