Commissioners press for parks inventory, urge faster master plan

Commissioners at the Jan. 15 meeting renewed long-standing requests for a parks and recreation inventory and called on council and staff to accelerate the master plan process and provide regular reports to the commission.
Commission members told the council liaison and staff they need a parks inventory and timely follow-up on prior recommendations so the commission can make informed recommendations.
"I've asked for no less than 4 years for an inventory on our parks, our soccer field space, our baseball field space, gym space, nothing," Commissioner Dan Faustina said. Faustina and other commissioners said approval of new residential developments without a clear view of existing field and facility capacity risks leaving youth teams without enough playing space.
Chair Michael urged the council to accelerate the master plan RFP, saying the commission should not treat the master plan as a long two-year process. "Let's make it a 6 month project," he said. Commissioners requested staff produce a regular written report from the recreation department and pledged to assemble a prioritized "wish list" of top projects so the liaison can carry clear commission recommendations to council.
Members also discussed the commission’s scope and stressed they do not want to intrude on planning and zoning’s legal authority; instead, they requested explicit guidance from staff about the commission’s purview so recommendations are focused on pathways, active open space and recreation outcomes.
