Johns Creek committee backs three-dog public-art proposal; installation costs sought from city

The Arts, Culture & Entertainment Committee heard a public-art application from Johns Creek Beautification proposing three stainless-steel dog silhouettes by artist Jim Collins and indicated support for the plan.
"We feel the intent has really been to kind of honor our canine officers in town," the applicant said, describing a Dalmatian, a German Shepherd and a Vizsla as life-size sculptures intended to be installed together. Staff told the committee the nonprofit would raise funds for the artwork itself but asked the city to cover installation costs, the concrete bases and ongoing maintenance.
Staff noted the proposed site is in front of the new fire station being built on Brambleau Road and said right-of-way and public-works review will determine final placement. A committee member disclosed a board role with Johns Creek Beautification and said, "I'm a board member of Johns Creek Beautification, so I think it'd be inappropriate for me to motion or vote on this." Committee members otherwise expressed support for keeping the three dogs as a grouping and for locating the Dalmatian near the combined Fire Station 63 and police substation.
Committee members asked staff to work with the public-works team on right-of-way issues, site plans and maintenance expectations before returning with any final placement recommendation. The applicant and staff will proceed with those coordination steps.
