Road supervisor recommends hire, board approves oil-cooler and new crew member

Michael Bergeron, Daniels County road supervisor, told the board he wants to add a young mower operator to the crew and to install an oil cooler on a recently purchased John Deere mower that overheats during summer mowing. "He's from the other side of the state... I'd love to stick him in a mower for 2 months," Bergeron said, describing his recommendation to hire Colton Nelson, age 22.
Bergeron outlined equipment needs: the new mower (model noted as 4105) runs hot in the high 90s, the sight glass has melted on one unit and an oil cooler is the "proper fix" to prevent further damage. Commissioners discussed timing and costs; Chair moved to approve the purchase and the motion passed unanimously. "Motion made and seconded to buy a cooler for the mower for the road department," the chair said during the vote.
On personnel, the board voted to hire Colton Nelson pending completion of a pre-employment drug test. Bergeron also reviewed a separate transmission concern on a 0.5-ton pickup and reported a surplus offers from the fire department that could be repurposed for road use. The department planned spraying adjustments after consulting regional spraying specialists and confirmed the procurement and staffing actions would proceed immediately.
