The Sylvania Safety Committee met July 6 to discuss the city’s approach to electric bikes, scooters and similar devices, hearing a police presentation on complaints and a series of council questions about where current local ordinances leave enforcement gaps.
"Like she said, a lot of this that I wanna be is informational because I realize there's a lot of information out there," Chief Miller told the committee as he opened his overview of recent complaints and evidence the department has received. Committee Chair Mary Westfall said members should review the chief’s materials and return comments to staff within a two‑week window, later set by members as a July 27 deadline for written input.
Members repeatedly raised the problem that classifications and age restrictions in the codified ordinances do not align cleanly with newer devices or with state law. Committee members and staff discussed whether to wait for pending state action — HB 948 was cited during the meeting — or to prepare a local approach focused on signage, education and clearer behavioral rules for sidewalks and trails.
