City agrees to five-year extension for Maplewood Mini Park lease

Service Director Joe Shaw presented a proposed second lease modification and extension for Maplewood Mini Park, explaining the owner agreed to a five-year extension with a single optional one-year renewal (six years total if extended).
"The owner has agreed to allow us to extend for another 5 years with an option to do 1 additional extension for 1 year," Shaw said, noting the city will cover property taxes for the small parcel but that the payment will be tied to actual tax costs rather than a fixed amount. The owner also requested advance notice when the city plans concerts or civic functions near the funeral home across the street for coordination.
Council debated how broadly to notify the owner about downtown music events; Shaw said he would notify the owner about civic events in the Redbird District but not routinely coordinate private events across the street. The council adopted the related ordinance as an emergency measure.
