Council briefed on e-bike and scooter safety; committee to collect feedback

The Sylvania safety committee told council it had held an information-only meeting on July 6 to review definitions and community concerns about electric bikes, scooters and similar devices. Councilmember Mary Westfall said the meeting’s goal was to update members on existing policy and to gather input before drafting any changes.
"The goal of this meeting was just to get everybody up to speed and, definitions for scooters and ebikes, etcetera," Westfall said. Chief Danny Miller reviewed enforcement and safety issues, telling the council that riders often do not ‘‘realize the rules of the road,’’ run red lights and are unsure when to use sidewalks or roadways.
Shaw and committee members discussed options including public education, better signage, setting maximum speeds and determining when helmets should be required. Westfall asked committee members and interested council members to review video and materials distributed by the chief and send comments to Service Director Joe Shaw, Chief Miller and Westfall by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 27.
The committee report did not propose a specific ordinance; Westfall described the meeting as informational and noted the council could wait for state-level action or adopt local rules. The council did not take formal action at the meeting but directed staff and committee members to continue review.
