City staff told council that Kingsford and neighboring Iron Mountain received approval for a residential recycling cart grant. The grant will be administered as a reimbursement and will cover 80% of the cost for each cart. For Kingsford, the grant is expected to provide carts for all 2,300 utility accounts and to supply 200 additional carts for new accounts.
Staff said the next step is to work with other county municipalities to prepare and release a joint RFP for residential recycling services to obtain the lowest vendor bid. Once service costs are known, staff will present options to council to set the lowest possible price for residents, taking into account anticipated reductions in waste tipping fees.
