Senator Shipley, the senator from Adams, introduced Dr. Elaine Barry as the 2025 Copic Humanitarian Award recipient and said Dr. Barry designated a $10,000 donation from the award to Cass Health to support a nurse apprenticeship program.
"It is my pleasure to recognize and introduce to you this morning a doctor and constituent, doctor Elaine Barry," Senator Shipley said in making the introduction. Shipley described Dr. Barry as a physician certified in family medicine, hospice and palliative care who has served patients at Cass Health in Atlantic and at satellite clinics in Griswold and Messina.
Senator Shipley said the award is presented annually to honor physicians who volunteer medical services and contribute to their communities. "This award is presented annually to honor physicians for volunteer medical services and contributions to their community," he said. According to Shipley’s remarks, the recipient designates the award’s charitable donation and Dr. Barry chose to direct the funds to Cass Health’s nurse apprenticeship program, an initiative Shipley described as intended to train nurses and help address the region’s health-care workforce shortage.
The presiding officer and other senators offered congratulations. The introduction and the designation of the donation were made during the introductions portion of the Senate floor session.
