DeWitt County Board tells three towns it will cancel animal-control IGAs and seek new agreements

During the Aug. 21 meeting, the Board voted to give official notice to Clinton, Farmer City and Wapella that DeWitt County will discontinue existing Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) for Animal Control Services and open negotiations for new agreements. County officials said the 2016 agreement needs updated language and a fee schedule that better covers costs; the agreement automatically renews unless notice is given.
State's Attorney Markwell explained that the original 2016 draft tied ticket fees to different statues, noting a $25 fee under state statute versus a $50–$500 range for county citations, and emphasized that municipalities are unlikely to pay unless the IGA is in place. Board members said Animal Control will continue to respond to calls in those municipalities regardless of contract status. The motion to notify the towns passed unanimously.
