City Manager told council members Peekskill has been awarded a $300,000 planning grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program to produce a comprehensive traffic safety action plan.
The manager said the plan will guide street‑by‑street decisions on treatments—signals, pedestrian and intersection improvements, bicycle lanes and shared trails—and that the city plans to pilot traffic counters and potentially a pilot flashing sign at one location. Estimated intersection flashing signs would cost between $4,000 and $8,000 each, staff said, and the grant requires a 20% local match that the city has set aside. The grant will be used to produce a strategic plan intended to prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries and to avoid a haphazard mix of fixes across the city.
Council members welcomed the award and discussed long‑term needs for water and sewer capital projects that could affect future debt schedules; staff said existing debt pay‑down schedules shown in the budget presentation do not include future capital borrowing and that those amounts will change as projects move forward.
