Advocates push Memorial Park upgrades; board flags maintenance costs

At the June 16 meeting of the Alliance City Board of Park Commissioners, residents Sid Zufall and Seth Dehoff presented proposals to alter the Veteran Memorial area at Memorial Park, urging removal of the split-rail fence and either expanded landscaping or a low brick wall.
Seth Dehoff showed a mock-up of a landscape design and told the board the estimated cost of continued landscaping maintenance would be "around $4,500 per year." Zufall said the split-rail fencing looks poor from State Street and added that lights illuminating the monuments are bent and expensive; he said landscaping could protect the lights. Board President Harry Paidas and staff discussed a low brick wall as a lower-maintenance option that would keep the memorial area compact.
Parks staff raised concerns about ongoing upkeep. Kim Cox said a maintenance contract with GAF would need to be established before committing to a plant-based solution, and Scott Davis warned staff capacity limits, saying the Park staff "can't keep up" with current workloads and questioned who would maintain new plantings if outside funds run out. The board agreed to table the item pending review of cost estimates, maintenance commitments, and additional design details.
