Peekskill accepts donation to plant 10 street trees

The Peekskill Common Council on Nov. 5 accepted a donation from Manzer Landscaping and Development to plant 10 street trees in 2024, the council heard.
"Manzer will be providing the labor, the plants, soil, and mulch, while the city of Peekskill will pay for water bags, poly sheeting, and the ongoing maintenance," Acting City Manager Chris told the council when presenting the offer, which owner Chappy Manzer is donating in honor of his mother, Christina Raspeck. The council adopted resolution J-12 authorizing the city to accept the gift and coordinate planting locations and timing with the Department of Public Works and the Conservation Advisory Committee.
The donation is intended to replace trees removed for disease or other hazardous conditions. City staff said species selection, schedule and required permits will be worked out with the CAC and that donated labor will be coordinated with the Teamsters Union. Council members praised the contribution as a cost-saving way to restore canopy in affected blocks.
City staff will return with specific planting locations and a maintenance plan; the resolution directs DPW to coordinate ongoing upkeep.
