Torrance County animal shelter reports parvo cases, staffing strain and asks for vehicles and donations

Torrance County Animal Services told the Commission it is managing heavy intake, infectious-disease challenges and limited fleet capacity.
"We're averaging 89 animals a month...We have 355 animals this year and have euthanized 140 for various reasons," director Danette Landon told commissioners, describing recent hoarding cases and a litter treated for parvovirus with local nonprofit support. Landon said Best Friends and other partners have helped medically and behaviorally, but the shelter lacks space and transport capacity.
Landon outlined recent outreach and vaccination work — roughly 36 vaccinations and 10 microchips at a drive-thru clinic — and requested donations of toys, pet food and monetary support. She also requested two dedicated vehicles for shelter operations and described using loaned vehicles after a van transmission failure.
Commissioners asked shelter leadership to formalize a multi-year vehicle and staffing plan so the county can evaluate capital needs in the budget process.
