The Torrance County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved Resolution No. 2025-20 to implement a 56.25% pickup of Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) contributions for county employees, effective July 1.
Misty Witt, Deputy County Manager, framed the item as administrative: "This is a required resolution that PERA needs for us to activate the 56.25% PERA pickup for employees. The resolution does state it'll be effective July 1st." Ryan Schwebach, County Chairman, moved to approve the resolution and Kevin McCall, County Vice Chair, seconded; the roll-call vote was 3–0 in favor.
Commissioners and the County Clerk discussed the value of PERA education for newer employees. Sylvia Chavez, County Clerk, urged the county to provide retirement education so staff better understand long-term benefits. Witt said PERA will deliver a workshop in June to brief employees on the change and its implications.
