Board supports NDOW thermal-imaging restriction, urges statewide application

The White Pine County Advisory Board supported proposed Regulation 526, which would prohibit hunting with thermal-imaging equipment during the seasonal dates proposed by NDOW, but recommended that the Commission apply the rule statewide rather than only in eastern units.
NDOW clarified the proposed seasonal window and units affected, saying the regulation "would apply from August 1 through December 4, during which no wildlife may be hunted using thermal imaging equipment in Units 11, 22, 23, and 24, including coyotes." Board members raised enforcement concerns and asked whether private-land hunting would be affected; Game Warden John Fromm noted thermal equipment can sometimes be easier to detect when visible in a vehicle but that enforcement remains challenging if hunters claim private-land activity.
Public commenters urged statewide application to prevent cross-county movement by hunters and raised concerns about spotlighting and other technologies. After debate, Thomas Brunson moved to support the regulation with a recommendation to apply it statewide; Jake Rosevear seconded and the motion carried with no opposition.
