City to join 2026–2027 ODOT salt contract; brine and calibration yield material savings

Assistant Director Bellack recommended the ordinance authorizing Wadsworth to participate in the 2026–2027 ODOT salt contract, saying the State price last year was $56.69 per ton versus $62.89 per ton previously paid — a $6.20/ton difference that he said amounted to roughly $22,320 in savings last season. He explained the city now uses brine and calibrated spreader controllers to reduce salt usage and that annual ordering has fallen from about 4,500 tons to roughly 3,200–3,600 tons.
Council moved the legislation to place Ordinance 26-063 on the Council agenda with a requested suspension and emergency consideration to meet ODOT timing. Bellack and Council noted remaining inventory from last winter was approximately 1,300 tons and the city will continue brine and calibration practices to manage costs and performance.
