Pleasantville City Council on July 21 set a public hearing for Aug. 18, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. to consider amending Chapter 165.06(4) of the zoning code to modify accessory building size limits. City Administrator Rachel Reynolds and Engineer Joey Whitehouse presented a review of variances approved over the past 13 years and comparisons to neighboring communities; the council signaled support for a standard similar to Indianola’s — allowing accessory buildings up to 1,800 square feet or 10% of lot area — while retaining Pleasantville’s existing height limit of one-and-one-half stories and a 24-foot maximum.
Reynolds said the City’s Board of Adjustment has recently approved multiple variances and that codifying new limits could reduce repetitive variance requests. Motion by Kyle Patterson, seconded by Chelsea Kain, set the public hearing; all voting in favor. The Planning & Zoning Commission will review the proposed ordinance language before the hearing.
