Joel Craiger told the council that the freezer and freezer floor at the Bear River Archery building are failing — he described frost heave and gaps from 0.5 to 6 inches and said the pantry is currently turning away or discarding donated frozen goods because storage cannot be sustained. Craiger said local partners had been helpful but that contractors had provided estimates that would require shutting the pantry for months and that a bid included in the packet showed roughly $200,000 for the work.
"We're getting a big volume... Tomatoes, watermelon, squash, everything. It's just coming in, and it comes in in 4 by 4 totes," Craiger said, describing strain on storage capacity. Council members thanked pantry volunteers, acknowledged the multi-jurisdictional nature of need, and asked the pantry to submit a formal, itemized request listing specific costs and any pledged donations. Staff offered to have the building inspector (Kurt Fuller) help calculate fee waivers or permit costs. Council moved to table the item to the next meeting to allow the pantry to supply a formal proposal and for staff to assemble fee estimates and potential aid options.
