Preston says wastewater plant on track but warns residents sewer fees likely to double

Mayor (speaker 1) told the council that construction of Preston’s new wastewater treatment plant is progressing within expected timelines and budget and that the city recently received a $405,000 grant to help pay for the project. "The construction is well within the target range of completion, which is December 2025," the mayor said, noting the project is north of $70,000,000 in scale.
The mayor warned that the city’s sewer fee, currently about $32.50 per month for residents, will likely increase substantially after the plant is finished. "Once this project is complete... the sewer fee that the residents are pressing that will be required to be paid will... double," he said. He added the council has worked to keep the increase as low as possible and that the $405,000 from Congressman Simpson’s office is helpful but small compared with total project costs.
Council members asked for continued updates on financing and implementation steps. The council did not take any new fiscal action on the project at the meeting; staff were directed to brief the council as grant and financing work progresses.
