Workshop advises immigrant families: do not open the door if ICE comes, read warrants under the door and document

At a community workshop hosted at an El Monte Union High School District site, Winston Leyva of Chirla walked attendees through how to identify and respond to immigration enforcement. Leyva emphasized the practical difference between a judicial warrant (signed by a judge) and an ICE administrative order, saying the latter does not by itself allow entry into a private home. He urged families to ask that any order be passed under the door for review and to refrain from opening the door to agents presenting an administrative order.
Leyva gave step-by-step advice for home, workplace and public encounters: remain silent, do not run at work, refuse consent to searches, document names/vehicles and call legal help. "De nuevo, regla número 1, no abrir la puerta," he told the audience, and suggested recording identifying details to support any later civil complaints.
