Board approves YMCA aquatics partnership to provide after-school swim lessons for 3rd–4th graders

District staff described the pilot’s operational details: selected schools will take turns (one school per week) and up to 80 students per site will participate; students will be bused to the YMCA complex for two activities per visit (one water-based, one non-water); families will be required to sign permission slips and waivers and some families may opt out; the district expects students to return to their school site by about 5:15 p.m. The program will start with 3rd and 4th graders because the district identified that age range as higher-risk for water-related incidents.
Board President Paulson lauded the partnership’s potential impact: "This agreement could really lead to a transformation of our community back toward being an aquatics city," he said during debate. After brief questions about pool heating and participant selection, the board approved the agreement 5–0.
