Board updates nutrition-services nondiscrimination policy to include political beliefs and activism

As part of preparations for a federal administrative review of the federally funded nutrition program, the board updated Nutrition Services policies and ARs to add protections covering political beliefs and activism and approved the change on first reading.
District staff told the board an administrative review of the federally funded nutrition program requires updates to policy language to ensure compliance. The recommended change expands the nondiscrimination clause in Nutrition Services policies and the associated administrative regulations to include political beliefs and activism.
"So we actually have upcoming in the next few months an administrative review of our nutrition program, which is mostly funded by the federal government...some of the things we have to get done is updating our board policies to align with the requirements of the federal government," a district staff member said during the presentation. The policy packet also included ARs that spell out how to file a complaint if a person believes discrimination has occurred.
Board members asked clarifying questions and then approved the policy changes (first reading/approval) by a vote reported as 4–0 with one absence.
