Public Safety Director Dennis Burke told commissioners that, following the retirement of the county's current medical examiner effective August 1, the county negotiated a shared-services agreement with the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office to provide all forensic pathology services for Union County. Pending board adoption, the agreement would begin August 1 and make Union County one of five counties (with Passaic, Hudson, Essex and Somerset) served by the regional office.
Burke described the action as a response to the impending retirement and the result of an extensive search for solutions; no final contract text was read into the open record during the agenda-setting session, and the board will consider the resolution during the regular meeting.
