Committee hears warning on landfill compactor repair; county faces equipment risk

Solid-waste staff raised an equipment risk at the county landfill: a compactor purchased last May for roughly $148,000 now needs a new engine and, without repair, would revert to scrap value.
"If we do nothing, we're pretty much flushing that $148,000 down the toilet because that compactor goes is now is all it's worth is scrap is what I'm being told," the solid-waste presenter said. Staff explained the challenge of operating with only one usable machine and that the Department of Natural Resources requires a contingency plan if the county cannot operate compaction equipment.
Committee members asked whether parts or motor swaps were possible; staff said using the working machine’s motor would leave the county with only one machine and therefore no redundancy. The discussion was sent to the infrastructure committee for further scheduling and procurement planning rather than being resolved in this meeting.
