Platte County to seek port-security grant to replace and expand sheriff's drone fleet

The Platte County Commission approved a resolution to apply for the FY2026 Port Security grant on Aug. 3 that would fund replacement and expansion of the sheriff's unmanned aerial systems (UAS) fleet.
Captain Jeffrey Shanks told commissioners the request would fund six American-manufactured drones and accessories plus one tethered drone, and that purchase requirements specify U.S.-made systems. "This grant specifically states that we have to purchase American manufactured drones," Shanks said. The total grant budget request would be $254,644.60 and carries a 25% cost share, meaning the county's match would be $63,661.15 if awarded; the match would be reflected in the 2027 sheriff's budget request.
Commissioners asked how drones are used today and for examples of public-safety applications. Shanks described current uses including vehicle pursuits, search for missing parties, thermal technology in fatal-crash investigations and security at large events such as the county fair and FIFA-related events. He noted drones can be deployed faster and avoid putting helicopter pilots at risk.
The commission approved Resolution 2026-RES-058 by roll call (vote recorded 2'0to'0). If the grant is awarded, procurement and the county match will follow county purchasing rules and budgeting processes.
